TG-GC/MS is becoming increasingly popular, as gas chromatography allows a first separation of the evolved species, before their identification by the mass spectrometer.
The evolution of the species from the TGA oven must be carefully coordinated with injection on the GC column. This can be accomplished by the use of an appropriate automated sampling loop (heated Autoinjector interface )that allows either injection the whole gas stream on the GC column (reflecting the exact gas concentration in the TGA furnace) or venting of the gas stream outside the system. The whole line including the sampling loop has been designed to be heated up 350 °C but this “at-line” setup avoids the storage of gases during long periods at elevated temperatures.
Switching between injections and venting needs to be done in relation to the progress of the sample decomposition process. Three methods are available: discrete, quasi-continuous and timed modes to fit best with the research needs.
